Sentence level
A sentence is the largest independent unit of grammar: it begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation point. A sentence must have AT LEAST 1 clause but may consist of an indefinite number of clauses. Structurally, English sentences can be classified four different ways, though there are endless constructions of each:
The classifications are based on the number of independent and dependent clauses that an individual sentence contains. An independent clause forms a complete sentence on its own, while a dependent clause needs another clause to make a complete sentence. By learning and being aware of these types, writers can add complexity and variation to their sentences.
