What do nouns look like ? What purpose do they have? Where do they typically occur in sentences, and how they interact with other words?

​Nouns and Noun Phrases can occupy various positions in a clause, and they can take on the role of:
​

• the subject of a verb:      The camera never lies
• the object of a verb:        The police arrested the criminal
• the predicative subject:  He became a barrister
